Every June, thousands of cyclists gather in Yamanashi Prefecture for one of Asia’s most iconic cycling events—the Mt. Fuji Hill Climb. As Japan’s highest peak and cultural landmark, Mt. Fuji offers a road that’s as challenging as it is breathtaking. This June, our riders attended the 21st Mt. Fuji Hill Climb—Japan’s largest and most iconic hill climb cycling event. With over 8,000 riders ascending the legendary slopes of Mt. Fuji, it was the perfect proving ground for 9Velo's superlightweight wheels.
Held annually in Fujiyoshida City, the Mt. Fuji Hill Climb is a 24km uphill time trial that climbs 1,255 meters in elevation along the Fuji Subaru Line, winding through lush forest and volcanic slopes, and finishing at the 5th Station of Mt. Fuji. Riders are grouped by age and ability, with staggered starts beginning as early as 6:30 AM.
This race is not just a test of endurance—it’s a celebration of cycling culture, with elite racers, weekend warriors, and first-timers all sharing the same goal: reaching the summit. It’s a route that’s become a bucket-list ride for cyclists across Asia, not just for its difficulty, but for its scenery and spirit.
Responsive, stable, and featherlight on the steepest gradients, those are what climbers need in the racing conditions. On this climb, 9Velo superlight road wheels were right at home. Light on the slopes, agile in tight turns, and confidently stable as the altitude climbed, they helped our riders find rhythm and speed on demanding terrain. Designed for maximum climbing efficiency, the new series features:

Stay tuned for the add-up of our road wheel line-ups. We’ll be sharing rider feedback, testing data, wheels' specs and technical details soon.

While the official hill climb draws over 8,000 participants, the region is perfect for year-round exploration. Riders can enjoy leisure loops around Lake Kawaguchiko and Saiko with views of Fuji’s summit. There are also quiet country roads threading between the Fuji Five Lakes.

The area is also home to hot springs, local cuisine like Fujinomiya Yakisoba (Stir-fried noodles packed with flavor and crunch), and scenic cycling routes that make it a dream destination for riders year-round.
